From the recording Stand Your Ground
Lyrics
LET MY PEOPLE GO
Go down Moses
Way down in Egypt’s land
Tell old Pharaoh
To let my people go.
Verse 1:
When Israel was in Egypt’s land
Let my people go.
Oppressed so hard they could not stand
Let my people go, so the Lord said
Chorus:
Go down Moses
Way down in Egypt’s land
Tell old Pharaoh
To let my people go.
Verse 2:
So Moses went to Egypt’s land, to say…
Let my people go.
To make old Pharaoh understand
Let my people go… cause the Lord said…
Chorus:
Go down Moses
Way down in Egypt land
Tell old Pharaoh
To let my people go.
Verse 3:
The time has come again to speak
Let my people go!
To teach the Truth & free His sheep
Let my people go!
Chorus:
And the Lord said, go down, go down
Pull down the walls that formed
Teach them Freedom
And let my people go
And the Lord said, go down, go down
Break all bondage formed
Teach them Freedom
And let my people go
Go down Moses
Way down in Egypt’s land
Tell all Pharaohs
To let my people go.
Let my people go.
Let my people go.
Artist notes: This traditional spiritual song has brought attention to the issue of civil liberties and rights for more than 100 years, a popular song during the underground railroad all the way to present day; we have seen this song surface whenever constitutional or human rights are being challenged. Ann has also added additional words to the traditional version with regard to “Freedom in Christ,” often forgotten when legalism and man-made doctrines (found in some religious circles) begins to overshadow the development of our personal connection to the Spirit of God within.
This song is in the public domain with additional verse contributions by Ann M. Wolf.
